Poore Gets Aqua Systems New Year's Bash Win; Rose, Williams and Warner Get Victories

(January 1, 2011) –
With seasonable temperatures and no threat of precipitation several hundred race fans spent New Year’s Day at Anderson Speedway for the 12th annual Aqua Systems New Year’s Day Bash.

Over 60 race teams in five divisions were on hand for the first race of the 2011 season with Anderson veteran Josh Poore winning both the Street Stock heat and feature races.

Poore battled Shawn Cullen for two laps of the feature before taking command of the race with an outside pass on the front straight. With Poore pulling away from the competition, Cullen and Frankie Oakes battled for the second spot.

On lap 16 Oakes was able to get inside of Cullen coming off the second corner to claim the runner-up position with Cullen finishing third. It was Poore’s fourth consecutive win in the Street Stock division dating back to the final events of the 2010 season.

Ronnie Rose rubbed fenders with leader Phil Jenkins going into turn three on the final lap and was able to grab the lead coming off the fourth corner to record the ThunderCar win. Jenkins took the lead on lap 12 when leader Shawn Cullen and Rose went high in turn three and was able to drive to the inside. From there Jenkins was pressed for the final 13 laps by Rose, before the final pass on the final lap.

Cullen was forced out of the competition on lap 14 with a mechanical problem. Dave McConnell recorded a third place finish and Nick Warner came from the back of the field to finish fourth after suffering a flat tire on lap 2 in a three car shunt in turn three. Frankie Oakes finished fifth followed by Brandon Tweedy.

Jeff Williams picked up where he left off to finish the 2010 racing season by getting the jump on Robert Marlow on lap eight to grab the point and pulled away for the victory. Early in the race five cars were battling for the top spot with Marlow holding down the inside line with Robert Eversole running high followed by Williams, Jonathan Morgan and Chris Jennings battling for position.

Eversole spun coming off the fourth corner on the sixth lap which moved Williams into the second spot. The caution waved for debris the next circuit and on the restart Williams and Peters got around Marlow. Williams was followed to the checkers by Nigel Peters, Robert Kelm, Chris Jennings and Jonathan Morgan.

Anderson’s Nick Warner used the outside line on the opening lap to take the lead in turn three from Jonathan Morgan to win the Front Wheel Drive Figure-8 opening event of the 2011 season.

Brandon Harding passed Morgan with an outside move on the back straight to claim the second position. Morgan finished third followed by Nigel Peters and Kevin Henson. New Castle driver Graeme Luan provided plenty of action at the cross-over, swerving through traffic twice while avoiding contact with the lead pack.
