Tharp Sweeps Figure 8 Action

(January 10, 2012) – The driver that finished the 2011 as the hottest in the Figure-8 division, continued that trend into the Aqua Systems New Year’s Day Bash.

It was the last appearance of the traditional Anderson Speedway Figure-8 cars on Saturday with the International Outlaw Figure 8 Series replacing the division in 2012.

Josh Tharp led the entire distance to record the victory in the feature race, but had to turn back two challenges from visiting driver Ben Tunney on restarts near the middle stages of the race.

Tunney chased Tharp for all 25 laps with Nick Warner running a close third until losing an engine on the ninth circuit.

There was plenty of excitement on the final lap when Bruce McFall used a late charge to slip past Curtis Chapman for third at the finish line.

Tharp won by 2.7-seconds over Tunney followed by McFall, Chapman and Donnie Woodard.

In the heat race, Tunney took the early lead but was passed by Tharp on the fourth lap with an inside move entering turn three. Danny Stanley Jr., Chapman and McFall rounded out the top five.
