Williams Returns to Win FWD Oval Feature

By Ken de la Bastide

(April 17, 2012) –
Defending G.W. Pierce Front Wheel Drive Division Champion Jeff Williams returned to competition on Sunday and returned to the winner’s circle.

Williams may make an occasional start in the Front Wheel Drive division this year concentrating his efforts in the McGunegill Engine Performance Late Models.

Williams took the early lead, but following a restart on lap five Ron Phipps used the inside line to take the top spot entering turn one.

But two laps later Williams got inside of Phipps coming off the fourth corner and completed the pass at the start/finish line.

From there Williams pulled away to win by 2.5-seconds over Phipps with the Richmond driving trio of Chris, Andy and Joseph Jennings rounding out the top five.

Trevin Henson made it two for two in 2012 by recording his second heat race victory.

Michelle Cutsinger led the first lap before being passed on a lap two restart by Joseph Jennings with Henson and Kevin Henson both slipping past Cutsinger before the lap was completed.

On the fifth lap, Jennings spun in turn two, surrendering the lead to Trevin Henson, but kept going in the right direction and retained the second spot.

Trailing Trevin Henson and Jennings to the checkers was Timmy Perkins, Cutsinger and Kevin Henson.

The second heat race victory went to Ron Phipps who took the lead from Marshal Clark Jr. with an inside pass on the front straight. Chris Jennings slipped past Clark before the halfway point.

Andy Jennings and Clark swapped the third spot several times before Jennings prevailed. Williams finished fifth.
