Warner Holds Off McKinney in G.W. Pierce Front Wheel Drive Figure 8 Action

By Ken de la Bastide

(April 29, 2012) – During the course of winning five G.W. Pierce Auto Parts Front Wheel Drive Figure-8 titles Nick Warner has become known for making late race passes to win features.

For Warner the Saturday night feature at Anderson Speedway almost saw Elliott McKinney pulling off a late race pass for a feature win.

Warner took the lead at the start chased by Kevin Henson, fast qualifier McKinney, Donnie Ellis Jr. and Keith Morris.

With McKinney having a tough time getting around Henson, Warner opened a sizeable lead. Finally in lap six McKinney used an outside pass on the back straight to pass Henson and set his sights on Warner.

It didn’t appear that McKinney was going to catch Warner, until the leader approached slower cars. That allowed McKinney to gain ground on every lap and on the final lap the two leaders were running nose to tail.

McKinney was unable to get alongside Warner and came up just three-tenths of a second short of the victory. Ellis, Henson and Mike Alley rounded out the top five.

McKinney scored the heat win by using the outside line to pass Ellis on the back straight on the second circuit. At the finish it was McKinney followed by Ellis, Warner, Henson and Alley.
