Helberg Captures Mitch Smith Auto Service 50; Allman, Dossey and Ellis Score Victories

(August 18, 2012) – California driver JoJo Helberg has always been fast in a sprint car at Anderson Speedway and finally recorded a victory in the Mitch Smith Auto Service 50 on Saturday for the Must See Winged Sprint series.

Helberg started third in the 19-car field and moved into the second spot on lap two with an inside move on Jason Cox with Aaron Pierce following suit.

With Jacob Wilson battling slower traffic, Helberg made the pass for the lead on lap 18. For the next 15 laps Helberg was unable to pull away from Wilson until the caution flag waved when Jimmy McCune spun.

On the restart Helberg pulled away from Wilson and Pierce with fast qualifier Brian Gerster slipping past Cox in traffic.

Helberg went on to win by 1.4-seconds over Wilson followed by Pierce, Gerster and Cox.

“It feels good to get that first win of the year,” Helberg said. “We’re leading the points and want to build up a cushion going to Berlin Raceway (Michigan).”

Helberg said Wilson is running strong and will be a contender for the championship until the end of the season.

“I had a good run, this is a great place to race,” Wilson said. “I wish we would have had a caution a little bit earlier in the race.”

Rob Allman used the outside line around early leader Jesse Bilbrey on lap three to capture the WMDH ThunderCar feature and used the win to narrow the gap on point leader Hannah Lundy.

With Allman opening a comfortable lead, Bilbrey, Lundy, Phil Jenkins and Earl Adams II waged a spirited battle to the second position.

Several times Lundy looked to the outside of Bilbrey but wasn’t able to make the pass at the checkers, falling half a car length short on the front straight.

For Allman it was his second consecutive win, followed by Bilbrey, Lundy, Jenkins and Adams.

“Always makes it interesting when there are a bunch of Thunder Cars out here,” Allman said of the 14-car field. “It’s fun racing with Hannah (Lundy) for the championship this year.”

In the tune-up for next week’s Grant Fritz/Greg Dietzen Memorial 100 for the Legends division, Jack Dossey Jr. set fast time and led all 25 laps to record his second feature win of the year.

Dossey was chased the entire distance by Josh Dietz with John Robbins passing Kyle Baugh with an outside move on lap seven to claim the third position. Baugh finished fourth with Jack Dossey III coming home in fifth.

Donnie Ellis Jr. recorded his fourth feature win of the year in the G.W. Pierce Front Wheel Drive Figure-8 division taking the lead from Trevin Henson on the second lap with an inside pass entering turn three.

Anderson Speedway returns to racing action on Saturday, August 25 with the Grant Fritz/Greg Dietzen featuring the Legends division. The McGunegill Engine Performance Late Models, EDCO Welding Street Stocks, WMDH ThunderCars and Thunder Roadsters will also be in action.
