Several new faces along with some familiar names visited the Texas Roadhouse Winner’s Circle during the MAX/WLBC Friday Night Summer Series at Anderson Speedway on Friday, June 17. It was the opening night of the Boss Hogg Pitt BBQ and Catering Hogg Wild Fun Weekend on the world’s fastest quarter mile oval.

Albany’s Daniel Russell remained undefeated in the Legends division, scoring his sixth feature win in as many tries. He started sixth and advanced to third position by the fourth lap and then ranked second on the 13th circuit after passing John Robbins.

Russell completed the race-winning pass on Speedway’s T.J. Sneva on the 16th lap and pulled away for a comfortable victory. Sneva earned runner-up honors followed by early race-leader John Robbins, Camby’s Scott McGinley and Greenfield’s Paul Holden.

In preliminary action, Russell also won the first Legends heat, while Anderson’s Clark Dietzen took top honors in the second heat. Russell also paced qualifying with a time of 13.952 seconds.

Fifteen-year-old Middletown driver Kyle Dautrich picked up his first career feature win in the Insight ThunderCar oval feature. It was a race that also saw two women running one-two during the early stages of the 20-lap race. Shantell Banks and Alice Riall paced the field the first 13 laps, with Banks leading laps the initial seven circuits and Riall leading laps 8-13.

Banks’ night ended on the 11th lap after a spin and a flat tire, while Riall was passed by Dautrich on a lap 13 restart heading into the first turn. Riall crossed the line in second spot followed by Rookie Billy Riddle, Brandon Phillips and Lonny Burton.

Riall captured the first Insight ThunderCar Oval heat while Anderson’s Tim Nickerson took top honors in the second heat. Clint Groves led qualifying with an official time of 15.308 seconds.

Two feature races were held in the Chappy’s Rent to Own Front Wheel Drive Oval division. The first main event saw Anderson drivers Dustin Burge and Jerry Smith race side-by-side during the initial laps of the 15-lap event.

Burge was able to overtake Smith on the front stretch and back stretch while Smith picked up the advantage in the turns. Burge was finally able to gain a clear advantage by the seventh circuit in the turns three and four. He then cruised to his second feature win of the season. Anderson drivers Brad Stevens, Kreigh Leever, Smith and Nick Warner rounded out the top five.

Greenfield’s Brandon Tweedy took the early advantage from his front-row starting position in the second Chappy’s Rent to Own Front Wheel Dive Oval feature but saw his night come to a premature end when he lost a wheel on the backstretch. Jeff Wright took the lead and cruised to a comfortable victory. Chasing the race winner were Pete Corsaro, Allen Wagner, Jerry Baker and Gregg Wiley to fill out the top five.

Keith Morris, Corsaro and Pendleton’s Daniel Cook picked up Chappy’s Rent to Own Front Wheel Drive Oval heat wins, while Burge led qualifying with a time of 16.006 seconds.

The Chappy’s Rent to Own Front Wheel Drive Figure 8 Feature turned into a two-car battle as Anderson’s Randy Owen and Frankton’s Chris Teepe pulled away from the remainder of the 11-car field as Owen held on for the win. Anderson drivers Travis Burge, Nick Warner and Allen Wagner rounded out the top five.

Mike Peters scored his first win of the year in the Insight ThunderCar Figure 8 feature. Peters and Billy Riddle got caught up in slower traffic on the fifth lap and Riddle appeared to take the lead. However, a yellow flag negated Riddle’s impressive pass. That placed Peters back in the first position and he was able to hold several challenges from Riddle during the remainder of the event. Current point leader Paris Swallows Jr. placed third followed by Terry Malone Jr. and Anderson’s Darryl Rogers.
