Patience paid off for CRA Super Series driver Eddie Hoffman during the 39th Anderson 400 presented by Great Deals Magazine Saturday, July 16, at Anderson Speedway. Hoffman stormed up from the 20th starting position to capture his first win in the short track classic at the world’s fastest quarter-mile oval. Hoffman adds his name to an impressive list of race winners that includes Mark Martin, Alan Kulwicki, Dick Trickle, Bob Senneker, Junior Hanley and Gary St. Amant.

Hoffman, of Wheaton, Ill., was the last of seven leaders in the race that ran to its completion despite the constant threat of rain. Much of the second half of the 400-lap event was held as occasional raindrops dotted Anderson Speedway. Hoffman was able to maintain his advantage over the final 147 laps to pick up the sixth win of his CRA Super Series career.

Knightstown’s Jeff Lane was hot on Hoffman’s tail over the last 100 laps of the race and ended up with a strong second-place finish. Tom Hernly Jr. of Lansing, Mich., was third, one lap down, followed by Jay Middleton of Lake City, Fla. and former Anderson 400 winner Bobby Parsley of Shepherdsville, Ky. to complete the top five.

Tommy Cook led the first five laps before pole sitter Eddie Van Meter took over. Van Meter led until lap 161 when Lane took the point. Van Meter returned to the front on lap 184 and led until lap 206, when Rick Turner of Yorktown took the lead as a result of pit stops.

Turner held the advantage for 22 laps before Lafayette’s Chris Gabehart moved in front for 10 laps. Turner then moved back into first for 15 laps before Hoffman took over for good. The race featured seven lead changes among 6 drivers and 17 cautions for 139 laps.
