Steele Grabs Fourth Little 500
Pole
Dave Steele of Tampa, Fla. earned his fourth "Little 500" pole position in
Thursday qualifying for this year's 55th PayLess/Delco Remy "Little 500" and
shares the front row for the 33-car starting field with defending race winner
Eric Gordon of Indianapolis, Ind. and Tony Hunt of Fair Oaks, Calif.
Steele's four-lap time of 44.964 seconds gave him his second consecutive pole
for the nation's richest pavement Sprint Car race, which gets the green flag at
8 pm Saturday night. The 500-lap race on the 1/4-milke paved oval is a USAC
Sprint Car Special Event and therefore affords no National points.
Steele won the "Little 500" in 1996 and is piloting the Northside Propane
Beast/Chevy.
Gordon is seeking his third consecutive victory and fifth overall in the race,
which would tie the record number of wins posted by Bob Frey.
Five former race winners made the 33-car field, including Gordon, Steele, 3-time
winner Jeff Bloom and 2-time winners Bentley Warren and Marv Carman. Former race
winner Chet Fillip was bumped from the field on Friday and is the first
alternate for Saturday night's race.
Wendy Mathis of Ocala, Fla. will start 32nd and is only the second female drive
in the race's 55-year history. Kelly Braithwaite finished 12th in 1984.
