Anderson Speedway Suffers Great Losses
Anderson Speedway
and the racing fraternity has been hit hard this week as we have lost two
legends in figure 8 racing to death. Leonard Gene "Cookie" Cook passed away
Saturday, March 20th following failing health for some time.
Cookie enjoyed racing at both Anderson and Mt Lawn but
loved the figure 8. Cookie reigned as the National Crown Champion in 1975 and
again in 1983. Gene never left Anderson Speedway, staying on as our wrecker
driver right through the 2009 season. He even had to use oxygen to get the job
done, but that didn't slow down Cookie. We will miss him for his great
contribution to Anderson Speedway and the sport of racing. We will miss our
"Cookie".
A memorial service will be held Friday evening March 26, 2010 at 8 p.m. at Condo
and Son Funeral Home in Wilkinson with Russ Lutes officiating. Friends may call
at the funeral home from 6 p.m. until the time of the service. Memorial
contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society 5635 W. 96th St. Suite
100 Indianapolis, In. 46278 Online condolences can be made at
www.condoandson.com.
Dick Hinshaw lost his battle with cancer after a long hard fight and went home
to be with his God on March 23rd. Arrangements are still pending. Dick
challenged the crossover course and was crowned the National Crown Champion in
1974. His son Randy also followed in his footsteps, winning the "Crown" in 1990.
Dick Hinshaw, a real champion, gone but not forgotten.
