McKinney Wins Figure 8 Feature; Pritchett Sweeps Mini Cups

(January 10, 2012) – After taking the lead on the third lap it appeared that Jeff Williams was going to record the victory in the Front Wheel Drive Figure-8 feature during the Aqua Systems New Year’s Day Bash.

With a comfortable lead Williams, the defending FWD oval champion, was making a statement for 2012 that he was going to be a factor in Figure-8 competition.

But coming to the crossover with two laps remaining, Williams saw a tangle of cars entering the “x” and slammed on the brakes of his newly constructed race car. Despite his efforts he collected Nick Warner, ending the day for both drivers.

That gave the lead to Elliott McKinney who was able to maintain the lead for the final two laps, beating Mark Allman to the checkers by four-tenths of a second. Larry Hahn, Donnie Ellis Jr. and Mike Alley rounded out the top five.

In both the heat and feature race for the Mini-Cups once Jared Pritchett took the lead he was never seriously challenged for the point, although in the feature race Stephanie Hile was closing as the number of laps wound down.
