Dane Wins Front Wheel Drive Oval Feature

By Ken de la Bastide

(June 12, 2012) –
Jerry Dane made an inside pass of early leader Ron Phipps on the front straight on the third lap and went on to to record his fourth feature win of the year in the G.W. Pierce Front Drive Oval division.

Jeff Saxon turned the fastest laps of the race closing on Phipps and finally made the pass on lap 15 entering turn four. Phipps followed in third followed by Trevin Henson and Paul Phipps.

Saxon had to battle his way to the front racing in close quarters with Paul Phipps and Trevin Henson. With Dane opening a comfortable lead, Saxon eventually moved into the second spot on lap 15 with an inside pass of Ron Phipps coming off the fourth turn.

Although he cut into Dane’s lead, Saxon still came up more than two-second short.

It was Dane’s third consecutive feature win.

“I’m trying to make a habit of it,” Dane said of winning in the division. “Sometimes it doesn’t work out.”

Dane said it was fun racing against Saxon, a former division champion, making his first start of the year.

In the first heat race, Ron Phipps led the entire distance chased by Dane and Saxon, who moved into the third spot on lap three with an inside pass of Paul Phipps entering turn three. The three front runners were separated by less than a second with the checkered flag flew.

The second heat race saw Mike Harrold make a nifty move on the first lap by passing both Timmy Perkins and James Frawley for the lead. But on the next circuit Frawley and Harrold tangled on the back straight.

That gave the lead to Trevin Henson chased by Marshall Clark Jr. and Harrold. But Harrold’s night ended on lap three when he made heavy contact with the turn four wall.

Frawley finished third behind Henson and Clark.
