Several familiar names were winners during The Star Press Saturday Night Series at Anderson Speedway on Saturday, May 7. Bull Baker, Kenny Tweedy, Joe Beaver, Billy Riddle and Curtis Chapman all scored feature wins.

Baker won the first of twin 25-lap features in the first Super Late Model appearance of the season. The Daleville driver jumped to the lead from the outside of the first row and cruised to the win. Knightstown’s Jeff Lane, Greenfield’s Tweedy, Greg Boone of Louisville and Kent Robinson of Bloomington completed the top five.

Tweedy jumped to the lead from the pole in the second feature and held off several challenges from Baker for the victory. Boone was third, followed by Robinson and Lane. Tweedy recorded the fastest lap in time trials with a lap of 12.241 seconds.

A familiar car drove into the Texas Roadhouse Winner’s Circle after the conclusion of the Terry’s RV Sales and Service Street Stock feature, but it had a new driver. Veteran Joe Beaver subbed for Anderson’s Rich Boyer in the No. 33 machine and he edged out a charging Ronnie Phipps at the finish line.

Phipps, who was subbing for Danny Acrey II, dove to the bottom of the racetrack in turn 3, but came a half car length short of passing Beaver at the finish line. Anderson’s Rod Phipps, Elwood’s Bruce McFall and Markleville’s Jeff Powers completed the top five. Beaver and Randy Hoppes picked up wins in the Street Stock heat races.

The Insight ThunderCar Figure 8 feature had not one, but two winners. Several cars from the Boss Hogg Catering and Jerky Figure 8 division also competed in the event. ThunderCar regular Billy Riddle of Anderson took overall top honors, while fellow Anderson racer Curtis Chapman was the highest finishing Figure 8 regular. Both drivers took home trophies for their efforts.

Riddle was closely followed by Paris Swallows Jr. for 14 of the 15 laps. Swallows tried to make a move on Riddle the final lap, but got loose and spun coming off turn two. Chapman then advanced to the overall second place finishing position. Swallows recovered for third, followed by Anderson drivers Rod Phipps and Roy Grissom Sr. to round out the top five. Phipps won the ThunderCar heat event with Chapman finishing second.

Anderson Speedway returns to racing action on Friday, May 13, with the debut of the Yellow Book at the Races.
