Banks, Riddle, Russell, Dustin and Travis Burge Record Wins

Anderson Speedway kicked off the MAX/WLBC Listener Appreciation Weekend on Friday, July 22, with Shantell Banks scoring her first career Insight ThunderCar Oval victory. Other winners included Billy Riddle in the Insight ThunderCar Figure 8’s, Daniel Russell in Legends and Chappy’s Rent o Own Front Wheel Drive victories went to Dustin Burge in the Oval and Travis Burge in Figure 8 action.

At the start of the 20-lap Insight ThunderCar Oval feature, Shantell Banks sailed into the first position with Collin Ratliff right behind. The two front-runners battled for the feature win during the event with Ratliff pulling alongside Banks at one point in turns three and four.

Banks was able to hold on to capture her first division victory. Ratliff earned a career best runner-up finish with Alice Riall crossing the finish line in third position. Point leader Brandon Phillips and Roy Grissom Sr. completed the top-five finishers.

In heat race action, Alice Riall grabbed a flag-to-flag win the first heat with Shantell Banks claiming top honors in the second heat race. Clint Groves posted the fastest time in qualifying with a lap of 15.432 seconds.

Billy Riddle collected his third Insight ThunderCar Figure 8 victory of the season after pacing the entire 15-lap distance. Riddle got the jump on Paris Swallows at the drop of the green flag and then held off late-race challenges from Swallows and Terry Malone Jr. At the finish, Riddle was chased by Swallows, Malone, Roy Grissom Sr. and Donnie Ellis Jr.

Continuing his dominance in the Legends division, Daniel Russell recorded his eighth feature victory in nine events. The 25-lap feature began with Paul Holden sailing into the top position. He led the opening eight circuits with Scott McGinley then grabbing the lead on the ninth go-around.

McGinley then dropped off the pace and Russell took over the point. He led the remainder of the event after fending off several challenges from John Robbins. Finishing third was T.J. Sneva with Eric Black and Tony Holden completing the top five.

In preliminary action, Daniel Russell took the lead on lap five of the first heat race and went on to score the win. Mike Coop was victorious in the second heat, pacing the final three circuits. Russell grabbed fast time honors with a best lap of 14.112 seconds.

An exciting Chappy’s Rent to Own Front Wheel Drive Oval feature took place with Dustin Burge grabbing his third victory of the season. Travis Erhart led from the drop of the green flag, until tire problems forced him out of the top spot. Once Dustin Burge was up front, he was forced to fend off a late-race charge from his teammate Brad Stevens. At the finish, Dustin Burge edged out Stevens with John Burge, Sam Folsom and Nick Warner rounding out the top five.

Travis Burge won the first Chappy’s Rent to Own Front Wheel Drive Oval heat with first-timer Drew Mannix wining the second heat. Brad Stevens was the top qualifier with a best lap of 16.140 seconds.

In Chappy’s Rent to Own Front Wheel Drive Figure 8 action, Travis Burge drove to a second feature victory of the 2005 season. In a race that was filled with cross-over action, Travis Burge finished ahead of point’s leader Nick Warner. Third was John Burge with Randy Owen and Allen Wagner filling out the top five.

Anderson Speedway returns to action on Saturday, July 23, with the conclusion of the MAX/WLBC Listener Appreciation Weekend. The Star Press Saturday Night Series features the 56th Best Way Disposal National Crown with the Boss Hogg Catering & Jerky Figure 8’s. The Ed Martin Auto Group SuperTrucks and Terry’s RV Sales & Service Street Stocks will also be showcased on the world’s fastest quarter-mile oval.

On Saturday Night, spectator gates open at 5 p.m. with racing beginning at 8. Admission is $10 for adults and $4 for kids ages 6-12. Children five and under get in free.
